Antique Porcelain Cake Plates with Peach Stripes - Set of Two
{HISTORY}
Softly striped in pale peach with shimmery gold handles, this pair of antique porcelain cake plates can easily become your go-to servers for a wide variety of meals. Peach happens to be one of those colors, like green and white, that complement many foods making it an easy choice for pretty presentaion.
From a simple plate of cheese and crackers to an extravagant charcuterie board, these two are just as pretty serving up hors d'oeuvres as they are desserts. Handpies, tartlets, macarons, chocolate lace cookies, English shortbread, coconut cake, fudge brownies, or an assortment of pastel petits fours all look equally at home and equally appetizing when heading to the table on these two little workers. And really, that's just the start. Finger sandwiches, garden salads, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, grilled vegetables, lobster salad, baked ham, deviled eggs... we could go on and on, but you get the picture. Variety is the spice of life with these two.
Possibly made in Czechoslovakia or France or Austria, there are no maker's marks on the back of either dish, but there is a set of initials that reads C.F.H. underneath a smear of gold paint or permanent marker. They could be the initials of Charles Field Haviland, of the Limoges, France Havilands who made some of the world's most exquisite porcelain. Or it could be the initials of a previous owner added to the back of each plate to ensure their proper return from potlucks and get-togethers away from home. If it happens to be the latter, it’s a sentimental sign that these dishes were not only part of the party but also beloved members of someone's household serving set.
Most likely made around the late 1800s to early 1900s, both plates feature an inner gold pinstripe near the center and a tomato red pinstripe just underneath the peach bands.
Aside from their easygoing nature and classic style, we love that there are two and that they match. That opens up lots of possibilities when it comes to creating balanced tablescapes with other complementary colors that easily transition with the seasons. Cheers to inspiring menus!
