Vintage Framed Miniature Portrait Print of Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish on Metallic Linen Paper

{HISTORY}

Meet Harriet!

The second wife of British politician George Stevens Byng, her full, formal name was Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish Byng, aka the Countess of Strafford. Born in 1820 to Charles Cavendish, the 1st Baron of Chesham, and Lady Catherine Susan Gordon, Harriet married George at the age of 27. Together, they had 7 children in addition to raising the six children George had with his first wife, who died three years before he and Harriet married.

There is not much more information on Harriet or her passions and pursuits, but it has been recorded that she sat for her portrait several times alongside George during their marriage. This portrait print of her was painted just two years after their marriage, when Harriet was 29 years old. From a painting by Sir William Charles Ross (1794-1860), dating to 1849, William beautifully captured Harriet's bright blue eyes, her porcelain complexion, and her chestnut colored hair - hallmarks of a quintessential English beauty of the 19th century.

William Charles Ross was a well-known British miniature portrait painter with an extensive clientele that included England's finest nobility and many royal figures. Harriet was not part of England's royal family but she was from and married into aristocratic society. Her portrait sits alongside other notable William Charles Ross portraits, including Queen Victoria, Queen Adelaide, and King Ferdinand of Portugal.

Printed on a metallic linen-style paper, this medium contains a lovely glow and vibrant colors that reflect light beautifully. Framed in a simple gold wood frame, this petite print holds great presence on a shelf. Adding instant British history to any space, we love its classic appeal that fits in so well with shelf decor, books, flower bouquets, art supplies, and plants.
