Mason's Ironstone Hand-Painted Ginger Jar Spice Jar with Lid

{HISTORY}

Mason's Ironstone is no stranger to history. They've been manufacturing dishware in England since the 1700s. With timeless designs that reflect their long manufacturing heritage,  it's no wonder that such a pretty hand-painted jar like this one is a classic statement piece in both beauty and functionality.

Originally made to hold ginger, herbs, salt, and other spices, ginger jars with their unique shape and removable lids have been the heralded holders of food flavorings for centuries. Many are inspired by Asian designs, the birthplace of the fully functional ginger jar during the Qin Dynasty in the 220 BC years.  Steeped in exotic appeal, spices were valuable commodities worthy of their own protective jar that symbolized wealth and status. Over the course of history, ginger jars came to include a myriad of designs and patterns reflecting cultural aesthetics and spice trade history around the world.

This one, made by Mason's Ironstone in England, features a hand-painted floral pattern in shades of blue, pink, green, and yellow against an ivory background. A beauty from all angles, the floral pattern appears on both sides of the jar as well as the top of the lid.

Hard to find, these days with its original lid, it was made for Rosemary Shelton, which may have been a luxury retail shop in London or a beauty company based in New Jersey. Although we couldn't find any more specific information about Rosemary Shelton, the shop, the beauty company, or the exact year that this jar was made, we suspect, based on some clues on the backstamp mark that it dates to the 1920s-1950s era.

Still fully functional as a spice holder, this lovely little container is also great for decorative display or holding an array of other kitchen and household necessities.
