Rare Vintage Restaurant Ware Dinner Plate by Walker China Floral Turquoise circa 1942-1980

{HISTORY}

Hailing from Bedford, Ohio, this vintage restaurant ware dinner plate was made by Walker China sometime between 1942-1980. A rarity on two fronts, it features a very hard-to-find  pale turquoise floral pattern with an airbrushed design and it also contains a handwritten number on back, which is pretty unusual for restaurant ware.

Given that it's a rare pattern with handwritten markings, we suspect that this might have been a test plate and/or a test pattern in consideration during the 1950s-1960s era when airbrushed designs on restaurant ware were very popular.

It's such a pity that Walker China didn't make more pieces like this one simply because it's so pretty. But the fact that it seems to be a lone design that has traveled decades through time makes it all the more special now.

The color of a summer sky, a springtime easter egg, a tropical sea, or an ice blue slushie, this shade of aqua-ish turquoise is a pastel lover's dream. Its floral design is also a lovely little romp into daydreaming and creative storytelling about how and why this mystery plate and pattern came to be.

Unmarked vintage restaurant ware is fun that way. Many pieces will tell you exactly what dining establishments they were made for, but not all easily reveal their secrets. Like our pastel wonder here, this bit of mystery turns an ordinary dinner plate into a conversation piece, a focal point, and thrilling dive into history to imagine all the possibilities one plate's origin story could suggest.
